Yesterday my workout was one of those crazy push yourself till you wanna hurl kind of workouts. And today I spent two hours at the gym. By the time I got home I was starving…who am I kidding, I was starving halfway through my workout!
I know that when I do an extra hard workout, I’m probably gonna be extra hungry the next day. And I know I’m not the only person that this happens to. It’s a common conundrum of trying to balance your diet and workouts. When this happens I usually try to add a few healthy snacks into my day. I ate cottage cheese and put a hard boiled egg white in my salad, but I hear my stash of almonds (or a cupcake) calling my name already, less than an hour after lunch! Do I give in? Help me—what do you do when your hunger won’t cooperate?

Hi Julie,
I generally snack on raw vegetables to keep the hunger at bay. At work I keep a bag of fresh organic spinach next to my computer and it helps keep me in check. I’ve found that the key to losing weight is to carefully restrict your diet after 6pm. Instead of dinner, I will often drink a carb-free protein shake. If you only eat protein after 6, you’ll see the pounds fly off.

Wow, sounds like you are working hard. I always make sure to eat right after a workout (a mix of protein and carbs) and that makes me feel better. If you are working out for two hours, maybe you should have a powerbar or gadorate or a banana during your workout so you don’t feel so hungry.
Sometimes when I am hungry and it’s not time for a snack (like an hour after lunch), I will have a hot drink, like tea or coffee, and that often makes the craving go away.
I just eat. But I have a metabolism like a F1 race car. Part of that is because I always eat several small meals a day instead of three big ones. But when I’m hungry, I just eat.
